The origin of Siamese cats is deeply rooted in antiquity. Siamese breed belongs to the Oriental Shorthair cats. The history of this amazingly beautiful animal shrouded in legend and “covered” “dust of centuries.” This breed there for hundreds of years, and is still debate about the exact origin of the Siamese.
There is a theory of the emergence of this breed in southwest Asia – in the region of Indochina, Burma and the Himalayas. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that Siamese cats are very similar in appearance to cats of this region (broken line tail, slender body and elongated shape of the head).
The government of Thailand in the old days was called Siam. Therefore cat breed supposedly originated in this country more than 600 years ago, called the Siamese.
In ancient Siam cats were the property of the king and jealously guarded from prying into his palace in Bangkok. They had the status of royal cats, maybe that’s why we know so little about the true origin of Siam. It is assumed that it was the ancestor of the local Bengal cat. One proof of this – the largest in comparison with other feline gestation period extending 65-68 days, while the long-haired cats, it takes 62-65, while the European Shorthair – 55-60 days. These royal cats in Siam were dark-colored with yellow eyes, but over the centuries there were numerous mixing and mutations that led to the Siamese color spotted with amazing blue eyes that are so different from the rest of these cats. Unfortunately, we have not reached any records of how organized breeding of cats and who is responsible for the preservation of the breed at the royal court, so this mystery has not yet been disclosed.
While the true origin of the Siamese can only speculate, there are precise data about when these cats were brought out of Siam.
In the second half of the XIX century, the ruler of Siam sent to Europe as a gift a few dozen high-ranking persons Siamese. In 1884, a pair of Siamese cats was taken to England by Mr. Owen Hood of the British Consulate in Bangkok. Cats have been demonstrated in the famous Crystal Palace in 1885. These cats were given to his sister, Mrs. Owen Velay, which later became one of the founders of the Club of Siamese cats in 1901, and in 1902 it approved a standard that already looked like a well-known type siamok today.
The following year, a new pair of Siamese cats and two kittens were imported into Britain. Proprietress of these cats were sisters Vivian. These cats and became the founders of the breed Siamese cats in Britain, began breeding. It’s safe to say that all modern Siamese cats are their genealogies of these Siamese imported into England in the 19th century.
Then this breed became exported to America and other countries. In Russia the first Siamese cat was brought to the beginning of the XX century.
As a result of meetings with other breeds and local cats she lost her purebred. At her home in Thailand, the same thing happened. So now the Association of Wildlife Thailand resumed work on increasing the number of Siamese and restore the purity of the breed.

Siamese surrounds the mass of legends about its origin, of its structure, of its character… and one of the most interesting links it to the emergence of Noah’s Ark c.”The male monkey in love with a lioness. From this love and born siamese, with the habits of the monkeys and the courage of a lion.”
There is another amusing legend about the origin of Siamese cats associated with Noah’s ark.”When Noah brought the animals for his ark, small cats did not exist. So after a few weeks of swimming ark appeared crowded rodents. Unable to cope with parasites, Noah turned for help to the lion – the king of beasts. Leo thought for a while and then with a terrible sound sneezed. From his huge nostrils appeared dozen small cats that looked a hair’s breadth, as a lion in miniature. These were Siamese cats. They managed to overcome the proliferation of rodents ».
By the way, some researchers also believe the appearance of Siamese result interbreeding, though not as exotic. It is believed that, being brought to Southeast Asia, interbred with the local view of wild cats.
Another legend tells us that “a long time ago in Siam was a princess who was very afraid that someone will steal her precious ring, which she filmed before a dip in the pool. One day he came to the pool, the princess began to look for someone who could guard the jewelry during her swim. Then her beloved cat came up to her and her tail curved to the princess could hang on to him his ring. And now every Siamese kitten is born with a curved tail to the princess could hang on to him his precious ring ».
And another legend on the same topic.”One Siamese cat went with his wife to the jungle to look for precious royal cup, missing from the palace in Siam. When they found the treasure, the cat went to the castle to report the find, and the cat was left in the forest guard jewel. Young cat climbed the tree and hid among the leaves. She wrapped her tail cup and a tree trunk to be sure that no one can steal the treasure while she sleeps. On the fourth day her husband returned and found that his wife gave birth to five adorable kittens. Caring mother bustled around children, holding a cup, so its tail remained permanently bent. And even more amazed cat, all kittens were small tail curled like a mother ».
But really – it’s one of the symptoms of degeneration, mating close relatives. Now this feature is highly undesirable in the characterization of the animal.
Siamese is an example of a miniature cat with an elongated wedge-shaped head. Its easy to identify by specific end color – signs of partial albinism.
A typical pattern of colors of Siamese cats (as well as baliniziyskih, Burmese and color-point) is due to temperature variations of the skin. In the extreme points of the cat’s body temperature of the skin is usually slightly lower than in other places. Growing in these “low-temperature” points hairs contain more dark pigment melanin, and therefore become darker. If Siamese cats are kept at a low temperature, the hair on their body becomes darker than usual. Conversely, in tropical countries usually dark places, known as the end color, lighter, due to exposure to elevated temperature. The same effect, although localized, is obtained when the paw is a long time, such as a bandage – an increase of heat causes the growth of new hair with less pronounced pigmentation than outside it.
kittens are born snow-white and gradually darken on the tips of the feet, ears, nose and tail, the final color is set in 6-10 months.

The nose is long, straight, continues the line of the forehead without a break. Chin and jaw of moderate size. The ears are elongated, large, wide at the base and tapered at the ends. One of the leading features of the breed – the shape and color of eyes. Color – always bright blue. This is the main feature of the Siamese. Experts describe it sometimes as radiantly blue, sometimes lively blue, and sometimes it is called luminous. Eyes should be almond shaped, placed a little obliquely. However, they should not be planted too deep, or, conversely, to be bulging.
The neck is long and slender. Torso muscular, flexible, somewhat elongated, proportioned. Shoulders about the same width as the hips. The back and loins are strong. The legs are long, thin, slender, strong. The rear is slightly longer than the front. The feet are small, oval. The tail is long, thin, pointed at the end. The coat is very short, thick, shiny and tight. All Siamese cats have acromelanic color, that is a different color core wool and hair on the muzzle, ears, legs and tail. This color is called a “point”.
CFA recognizes Siamese cats only 4 main color: seal point, blue point, chocolate point and lilac point, Siamese cats are also the other colors (cream point, red point, parti – color point and lynx point) are a group of short-Color-Points. The situation is similar in CFA with Balinese (4 main color) and yavaneziyskoy (all other colors) rocks.
Some associations (such as ACFA, CFF, ACA) is registered purebred Siamese cats and siamopodobnyh together without isolating color-point, but do not allow a dilution of those who went out of their ancestors or oriental longhair breeds.
Other associations (these are TICA and most European associations and federations) think Siamese cats and siamopodobnyh derived from Oriental Shorthair cats single breeding group and register them all either on the main stud book, or subdividing an official and additional registers ( GCCF).

old type and modern Siamese
Modern look Siamese and oriental cats is significantly different from how they looked before the cat.
We used to be called blue-eyed Siamese cats that the tip of the muzzle, ears, legs and tail are dark brown, almost black, and beige body. However, experts distinguish two breeds of cats with color – Siamese and Thai. These rocks have a common origin, but made different addition or, as the professionals say, – different exterior.
The separation into two species occurred about the middle of the 50s of the last century, when the result of an active breeding based on traditional Siamese created a new type.
This is a graceful, slender cat with a wedge-shaped head, or so-called “face-martens’ feet high. Ears have more than the usual “Murok” and apart. Eyes slightly oblique, shaped like almond kernel. Panther in miniature. New cats and became known as Siamese.
But some breeders remains committed primeval Siam. In 1990, they have made the registration of the breed in the World Cat Federation. To avoid confusion, these cats were called Thai. These are the cats we have more common, even though we mistakenly call them Siamese. This cat sturdily built, well muscled, the head has a rounded shape, ears of medium size.
Siamese cats are very fertile, they bring to 2 litters per year in each of 5-6 kittens. It happened that a Siamese cat brought to 11 and even to 13 pups! Usually, the cats of this breed – great mother, but some are too excitable females there are not inclined to take care of the offspring. So for breeding should not be used too nervous animals.
Siamese kittens develop early. Soon after birth, they already have a strong personality and is very confident. At birth, Siamese kittens are all white, the end parts of the body gradually acquires a characteristic color. Siamese cats with dark brown markings and blue colored spot on the nose appears about the tenth day after birth. And cats with chocolate and lilac color markings may appear only at the age of three months. Fully color appears only in yearling cats. Depending on the characteristics of the organism cat feeding kittens lasts 40 to 60 days.
The mother of kittens should take no earlier than their age reaches twelve weeks. They should be near the cat at least part of the day, in order to complete their “education.” Then from the kittens grow more balanced adult cats.
At the beginning of the life of a kitten is fed only mother’s milk and feeding it is not a problem. This period lasts for several weeks. The first portion of milk cats – Colostrum is, which contains all the nutrients for protection. Siamese kittens from various, mostly infectious, diseases, that is, for antibacterial protection. With colostrum newborn Siamese kitten receives antibodies, and their largest amount digested within the first 6 hours of life. Later the mucosa of stomach and intestines kittens misses antibodies in the body.
The body of mother-cat begins to produce milk rich in proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Thus, in one liter of milk Siamese contained ’70 protein. During the first 8 days of life weight kittens doubled. For comparison, the human baby doubles its weight in 5-6 months, the foal – 60 days, and the calf – for 47. Siamese kitten sucks mother of 3 hours per day, and all the rest of the time it grows. In order to determine whether or not fed kittens, pay attention to their behavior: Siamese kittens fed quietly sleep or suck cat, hungry and squeak, creep around the mother or suck his thumb outstretched.
